Vendors and agencies still send PDF forms that are not fillable, so people print them, write by hand and scan them back. A free PDF reader can add typed text directly on the page instead.
The free version of Foxit PDF Reader includes an Add Text tool under its eSign menu. You click where the text should go and type, as if the PDF were a form.
What you need
- The free Foxit PDF Reader installed on your computer
- The PDF you want to fill in

Open the PDF and choose Add Text
Open the PDF in Foxit PDF Reader. Go to the Foxit eSign menu and select Add Text.

Click and type
Click the spot on the page where you want the text and start typing. Repeat for each field you need to fill.

Adjust the text and mark checkboxes
Select text you added to change its color or make it larger or smaller. You can also tick checkboxes and radio buttons on the form. Save the PDF when you are done.
Tips and common problems
- This works on PDFs that are not fillable forms, so you do not need to print, hand-write and scan.
- You can edit text after adding it, including its color and size, so it lines up with the form's boxes.
