How to auto-sync data from Excel to Google Sheets with Coupler.io
Keep a Google Sheet in sync with an Excel file on your computer. The Excel file lives in your OneDrive folder, and the Coupler.io add-on copies its data into Google Sheets on a schedule.
Jump to a step (7)
You keep a spreadsheet in Excel on your computer, but someone else works from Google Sheets. Copying and pasting the latest data over every time something changes is slow and easy to forget, and people end up working from old numbers.
OneDrive is the bridge. Save the Excel file in your OneDrive folder so every change reaches the cloud. Then the Coupler.io add-on in Google Sheets imports that file into a sheet, replacing the old data on a schedule you set, such as every 15 minutes.
You set it up once. After that, changes you save in Excel show up in Google Sheets at the next refresh, or right away if you run the import manually.
What you need
- Microsoft Excel and the OneDrive app installed and running on your computer
- A Google account with Google Sheets
- The Coupler.io add-on for Google Sheets
- The Excel file saved in your OneDrive folder

01
Save the Excel file in your OneDrive folder
Save the workbook into the OneDrive folder on your computer (install the OneDrive app first if you do not have it). In the video the file is
Player Data. Make sure OneDrive is running, or your changes will not reach the cloud and nothing will sync. -
02
Create the Google Sheet
Create a new spreadsheet in Google Sheets and give it a name. I name it to match the Excel file.
-
03
Install the Coupler.io add-on
In Google Sheets, open
Extensions, thenAdd-ons, thenGet add-ons. Search forCoupler.io, install it and grant the permissions it asks for. The Coupler.io panel opens in the sheet. -
04
Add an importer with Excel as the source
In the Coupler.io panel, add an importer and name it, for example
Excel auto sync. ChooseMicrosoft Excelas the source and continue.Connect the OneDrive account where the file is saved and sign in. Then browse to the folder, select the Excel file and pick the worksheet (
Sheet1in the video). -
05
Set the Google Sheets destination
Connect your Google account and allow the permissions. Select the destination spreadsheet and sheet, and leave the cell address at
A1.For
Import mode, chooseReplace.Appendadds new data under the old data each time, whileReplacekeeps the Google Sheet an exact copy of the Excel file. -
06
Turn on automatic data refresh
Switch on
Automatic data refreshand pick an interval. I use15 minutes. Choose the days (every day in the video), set the time range to cover the hours you need (I use 00:00 to 23:00), and select your time zone. Then selectSave and Run. The first import finishes in a few seconds. -
07
Test the sync
Add a new row to the Excel file and save it. Either wait for the next scheduled refresh, or select
Runin the Coupler.io panel to import right away. The new row appears in the Google Sheet. You can close Excel. The schedule keeps running on its own.
Tips and common problems
- The OneDrive app must be running on your computer. If it is paused or closed, your latest Excel changes never reach the cloud and the sync shows old data.
- Choose
Replaceif the Google Sheet should mirror the Excel file.Appendadds rows under the existing data on each run. - Changes appear at the next scheduled refresh. Select
Runin Coupler.io when you need them immediately. - Always save the Excel file after editing. Coupler.io reads the saved file from OneDrive, not what is on your screen.
Going the other way
To pull data from Google Sheets into Excel instead, see Connect Google Sheets to Excel and auto-refresh the data.
Questions
Can I automatically sync an Excel file to Google Sheets?
Yes. Save the Excel file in OneDrive and use the Coupler.io add-on in Google Sheets to import it on a schedule, such as every 15 minutes, with the import mode set to Replace.
Does the Excel file need to be in OneDrive?
Yes. Coupler.io reads the file from your OneDrive account, so the file must be saved in your OneDrive folder and the OneDrive app must be syncing.
How do I sync the other way, from Google Sheets to Excel?
Publish the Google Sheet to the web and connect Excel to it with Data and From Web, then set the query to refresh every few minutes. That method is in the linked video below.
